Laporta Revives Barcelona's €510 Million Purchase/Loan Timeline
Barcelona is still seeking funding and buying time to complete the Camp Nou stadium, to ensure its economic projections are met.
According to "Verzeh Se", the club's latest financial action includes the approval of 510 million euros of new financing, which is divided into two main parts; 300 million euros have been earmarked to complete the construction of the stadium and another 210 million euros through bonds backed by future media revenues from LaLiga and UEFA.
This package of 210 million euros is also divided into two phases of 105 million euros, the first phase was finalized in July and the second phase was planned for October or November.
John Alvarez, a lawyer specializing in financial restructuring, explains that the objectives of these packages are different, and that the media bonds act as corporate financing to strengthen the financial resources of the club. Despite this, Barcelona needs more financial resources due to increased costs such as strengthening the second tier of the stadium and new works related to technology and the museum. Ratings agency Morningstar has maintained the club's credit rating but changed the outlook to stable due to delays in debt relief. The agency has warned that further increases in debt or delays in projects could create negative pressures.
Based on the financial analysis, the total financial obligations and projected liabilities of Barcelona can reach significant figures, while the club's net profit after extraordinary expenses and taxes is very small and its net assets are negative. This situation shows that high income does not necessarily mean a lot of liquidity when obligations are due, and the club should pay attention to its real coffers.
Nevertheless, the rapid reception of the bond issued in July by institutional investors shows that the market is still open for Barcelona and that investors have confidence in the project. Access to the debt market has bought Barcelona time, but the club's main test is whether a full return to the Camp Nou can deliver the promised revenues so that financial obligations and accumulated debts are paid on time.
