All the elements of Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, both independently and together, work brilliantly: flexible combat, acrobatic and eye-catching movements, calculated environmental puzzles, an extensive cast of attractive characters and stunning visuals; All of this is tied together in a clever Tarot-based system that allows ideas to complement each other. Belmont's Curse seems to have no destiny other than to sit alongside Symphony of the Night as one of the best Castlevania games in history and one of the greatest Metroidvania works.
The Castlevania series holds a special place in my heart. I've spent decades playing games in the series since the first release, and the balance that Belmont's Curse strikes is admirable from start to finish; A work that is both a great platformer adventure on its own and respects the various paths and special mechanisms of this series, both good and bad. Brilliant gameplay, great music, stunning environments, old and new characters, and a great array of difficulty settings make this easily one of the highest quality action platformers I've ever experienced. Now that the dust has settled, I think it could be argued that Belmont's Curse is perhaps the best Castlevania game ever.
Even when Castlevania: Belmont's Curse bores me, the smile never left my face and I immediately returned to the game to see what other secrets were hidden in Dracula's castle. An engaging story, brilliant exploration and combat, and a near-perfect blend of old and new elements make the return of Castlevania an experience that more than makes up for the decade-long wait.
Castlevania: Belmont's Curse brings Konami's popular series into the modern age with a focus on fast-paced action. Handy map-tracking tools, exciting combat, a likable new hero, and movement mechanics that challenge your quick reflexes all help this highly-anticipated sequel hold its own in an already overcrowded genre. However, Belmont's Curse is overall a better MetroVania than a full-fledged Castlevania, as it sacrifices some of the franchise's signature charm and feel in the process. Still, I wouldn't be upset if I see Evil Empire Studio's name next to another Castlevania game in the future. I just hope we don't have to wait another 18 years for its release; I doubt my reflexes will still be fast enough when I reach my mid-fifties!
After a long hiatus, Castlevania has returned to its 2D roots in full form; One can't escape the feeling, though, that the game needs to carve out a more distinct identity among the countless modern rivals that have drawn inspiration from its legacy.
