Kate Phillips, BBC Director of Content: We Will Never Lie to Audiences About AI.
Kate Phillips, director of content, said today that the BBC will never mislead its audiences about its use of AI. Phillips said AI "is now part of television production" as a "research and editing tool," but added that the broadcaster will never use AI in major productions such as Blue Planet III.
Chief content officer Keith Phillips said today that the BBC would never lie to viewers about its use of artificial intelligence.
Phillips noted that "artificial intelligence is now part of television production" as a "research and editing tool" but said the company would never use artificial intelligence in a big show like Blue Planet III in terms of what you see on screen. He was speaking as the MIPCOM audience was shown a trailer for Blue Planet III.
"We would never use AI for anything because you're lying to the audience and we could never do that," Phillips said at Cannes. His comments came a fortnight after his boss, chief executive Matt Brittain, said he had been sent an AI-produced episode of Doctor Who which he called "very good". This has drawn support from some at the BBC who fear the impact of AI on jobs and creativity. Watch on Deadline
Phillips today made an emotional statement about how the BBC will continue to operate the way it always has, rather than relying on algorithms.
His comments come as the BBC works more closely with YouTube, including the launch of multiple channels, and a day after YouTube Europe chief Pedro Pina said the platform was "not investing in content creation".
"Someone recently asked me about algorithms and whether I order based on algorithms, and I'm going to say, 'Absolutely not,'" Phillips said. Just because the distribution mechanism is changing doesn't mean our creative goals have changed. People want great content. YouTube is not a commission, it is a platform. "If you order based on algorithms, you're literally a creative wreck."
