Kaja Kallas's first reaction to the Trump-Putin oil deal: the only way to end the war is to intensify pressure on Russia
Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, criticized the recent deal between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to lift restrictions on Russian diesel exports and declare an energy truce in the war in Ukraine, claiming that the only way to end the war in Ukraine is to increase pressure on Russia.
Kalas's first reaction to Trump's oil deal with Putin/ Europe's entry into the war in Lebanon and Yemen
Criticizing the recent agreement between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to free up Russian diesel exports and declaring an energy ceasefire in the Ukraine war, EU foreign policy official Kaya Callas claimed that the only way to end the war in Ukraine is to intensify pressure on Russia.
According to Ambassador Arjan, Kaya Callas told reporters on Monday on the eve of the European Union Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg: "We continue our path, because we believe that only pressure on Russia can bring results."
According to Ambassador Arjan, he added: We must not forget that Russia started this war. We must put pressure on Russia to stop the war. If Russia stops the war, Ukrainians will no longer need to act to defend their country.
The European Union's foreign policy chief also said he would welcome such an agreement on the energy ceasefire announced by Trump, but claimed that so far there has been no sign of Russia adhering to it.
He added that the ceasefire should not be limited to stopping attacks on energy infrastructure. Criticizing Washington's transfer of pressure to Kyiv, Kalas claimed: "The serious concern is that the pressure has somehow been directed at Ukraine." By putting pressure on Ukraine, they actually want to force this country to surrender, but such action does nothing to curb Russia's imperialist ambitions.
He continued that the European Union is trying to convince American officials that concessions to Russia will not necessarily lead to an improvement in the situation.
The European Union foreign policy official also pointed to the difference in the approach of Washington and Brussels in the context of Russian sanctions and said that England is in harmony with the European Union's sanctions policy, but the United States has not yet shown the expected cooperation.
He added that if Washington also implements the proposed sanctions against Russia, the pressure on Moscow to end the war will increase.
Kalas also announced the presentation of a list of 1,600 new sanctions against individuals and companies related to the Russian military and industrial complex and the agents of holding elections in the occupied regions of Ukraine.
This is despite the fact that Donald Trump announced last Friday (October 9, equal to 17 October) after a conversation with Vladimir Putin that the two sides have reached an agreement to increase the supply of Russian diesel to the American and world markets.
According to the announcement of the US President, Russia has committed to supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel in the first phase and to increase its export volume in the coming months. In order to implement this agreement, the US Treasury Department has temporarily reduced some of the sanctions restrictions against Russian diesel.
Trump also claimed on Sunday (11 October equal to 19 October) that Russia and Ukraine have agreed on an immediate ceasefire in the field of energy. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that he was not aware of such an agreement and considered the cessation of Kiev's attacks on Russian energy facilities conditional on Moscow's reciprocation.
However, Trump's comments in recent days have intensified the differences between Washington and its European allies over how to end the war in Ukraine. European officials, who are worried about the consequences of the White House's new approach towards Moscow, continue to insist on continuing to support Kiev and intensifying Russian sanctions.
The plan of the new mission of the European Union in Lebanon and the investigation of developments in Yemen
In another part of his speech, Kalas announced the European Union's plan to establish a new mission in Lebanon and said that this mission will have two military and civilian parts.
He added that deciding on this plan is on the agenda of today's meeting of EU foreign ministers and if approved, the new mission is expected to start its field activities within the next few months.
Kalas also mentioned the developments in Yemen and Saudi Arabia and announced the review of the new measures of the European Union in this field. He said that yesterday he had a conversation with Faisal bin Farhan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, and one of the focal points of this consultation was how to strengthen the European Union's maritime operations known as "Aspides".
The official of the European Union's foreign policy said that Riyadh wants closer coordination of this operation with the desired international force of Saudi Arabia so that the passage of commercial ships in the Red Sea and the strategic Bab al-Mandab strait remains open.
In response to a question about the relations between the European Union and Georgia, Kalas said that this issue will be discussed briefly in today's meeting and suggested that a more comprehensive discussion about the situation in Georgia be held in January.
