China's J-20S fighter jet, the latest two-seater stealth model, is considered a potential threat to US naval forces in the Pacific, with Beijing announcing its ability to precisely attack maritime targets.
In the last decade, the People's Republic of China has invested heavily in the development of its military capabilities, especially in the air force sector. Now, the country's state media is reporting a change in operational approach in one of its most advanced air assets. This development can change the balance of military power in the Pacific Ocean and create new scenarios for the Pentagon.
J-20S: mission development beyond air superiority
On January 11, 2026, Chinese state media (on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the first flight of the J-20 fighter) announced that the two-seater model of the J-20S Mighty Dragon is capable of precision attack on maritime targets. This development extends the J-20's core mission beyond air superiority to include advanced electronic warfare, command and control, and drone teaming capabilities.
The J-20 is China's first fifth-generation stealth fighter, originally designed for air superiority missions. The J-20S model is a two-seater version designed to expand its operational missions. A second occupant can help manage complex missions involving sensors, electronic warfare and drones. China's state television CCTV describes the J-20S as capable of medium- and long-range air superiority, precision strikes against land and sea targets, advanced situational awareness, electronic jamming and tactical command and control. However, these are still Chinese claims and have yet to be independently verified.
The importance of anti-ship attack capability and its challenges
In modern naval warfare, it is vital to identify and attack enemy ships before they can fire their weapons. Aircraft carriers, destroyers, and other vessels are valuable targets, and stealth aircraft can complicate their defenses by evading detection. A stealthy J-20S equipped with anti-ship weapons can approach disputed maritime areas undetected, reducing the response time of defense systems. The model can also serve as a reconnaissance platform and provide targeting information to other Chinese systems, which is critical to the US Navy's operations in the Taiwan Strait, East and South China Seas.
USNI News reported that the anti-ship weapons carried by the J-20S are still unclear. China has not introduced any specific anti-ship missiles for this fighter. Important questions remain unanswered, including whether the anti-ship missiles fit inside the G-20S's internal compartments or require external carriage, how external carriage affects stealth characteristics, and what the range and targeting capabilities of these weapons are. Internal carry is essential to maintain concealment characteristics. While China has an extensive arsenal of advanced anti-ship weapons, their compatibility with the J-20S has not been confirmed.
Combination of manned fighter and drones; The future of battle?
One of the most important potential capabilities of the J-20S is its ability to coordinate with drones (Manned-Unmanned Teaming). China, like America, has shown its interest in joint and autonomous combat systems. With a two-seater configuration, one crew can focus on piloting and the other on managing companion drones. These drones can perform missions such as maritime reconnaissance, electronic warfare, jamming, target recognition, decoy operations and supporting attacks against high-risk targets. However, China's true capability in complex operations with J-20S-led drones has yet to be publicly demonstrated.
A growing threat to the US Navy in the Pacific
US naval forces near the First Island Chain are currently facing China's growing and powerful anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) network. These threats include long-range anti-ship missiles, submarines, surface vessels, maritime patrol aircraft, and coastal surveillance and targeting systems. China's J-20S fighter could add another potential attack platform to this network. A stealthy aircraft capable of naval strikes could pose a serious problem for allied forces in the region and represent a significant evolution in China's air power strategy.
