The British Broadcasting Union has a new boss.

Noel McClean has been appointed chairman of Bectu and will take over from Philippa Childs early next year.

McClain previously spent 13 years at Bectu, rising to the position of National Secretary, before becoming Deputy General Secretary at Bectu's Prospective Parents' Union.

McClain described the move as "the honor of my life." "Philippa has led Becto through eight difficult years, including Covid and the slowdown in US film and television, and has delivered for members every step of the way," he added. However, work is never done, and in the face of ongoing challenges such as BBC cuts, broadcaster competition, consolidation, artificial intelligence and global economic headwinds, our members need the support of their union more than ever.

Childs added: "I have enjoyed working with Noel throughout my time as Bectu chairman and have seen his hard work, tenacity and thoughtfulness from the outset. He understands the challenges facing workers across the creative industries and will work tirelessly on their behalf. I couldn't leave Bectu in safer hands and I'm also certain the membership conditions have been influenced by his leadership."
