New York GOP candidate criticizes Harry Styles for paying tribute to criminal immigrant

New York GOP gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman reacts to Harry Styles' tribute to Oscar Belgall, a violent immigrant with a known gang who attacked neighbors with a machete. Blakeman is highly critical of New York Governor Kathy Hochul's policies as thousands of ICE detainers are ignored.

New York presidential candidate Bruce Blakeman blasted Harry Styles as an "untouchable" elitist after the singer paid tribute at Madison Square Garden for shooting an immigrant during a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation.

Styles, who is doing a 30-night residency at Madison Square Garden, took a moment during his show to honor 28-year-old Oscar Belgall, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic who was shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Thursday while his 5-year-old son was in the backseat of a car.

"I just want us to take a moment tonight to think about Oscar Belgale and I want us to just think and remember to just look out for each other," the singer said.

Blakeman criticized Stiles over the tribute, arguing that illegal immigrants with prior convictions should be deported and not championed by celebrities.

Belgal was shot after he allegedly refused to comply with officers conducting a targeted arrest operation. Marcus Charles, a top ICE official, defended the officers at a news conference Friday and explained what led them to fire.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Belgal has previous arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession. Federal authorities also alleged Belgal had ties to the Trinitarians street gang.

"Is this who [Stiles] wants in our communities? Is this who he supports instead of federal agents who just want to do their job?" Blakeman asked.

Blakeman, who is in the final weeks of his New York gubernatorial campaign, argued that celebrities like Styles are immune from the consequences of the immigration policies they appear to support.

"Harry Styles and elites like him, they know these criminals aren't moving into their neighborhoods," he said. "They move into neighborhoods with Hispanic and Latino, Asian-American, African-American and Caribbean populations and harm those communities and try to get those kids into their drug gangs."

Mamdani calls ICE 'rogue' agency after New York shooting, claims law enforcement agents are 'just a suggestion'

Blakeman's comments against Stiles come as New York leaders, including Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani, continue to oppose the Trump administration's immigration enforcement efforts.

More than 16,000 ICE detainers have not been honored by New York since January 2025, according to a DHS report, while Mamdani called ICE "rotten to the core."

Blakeman criticized Hochul as "out of touch" and accused him of putting New Yorkers at risk through his immigration agenda.

Belgal is reportedly being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn with a bullet lodged in his neck. His legal team said he was enduring "deplorable conditions" at the facility.
