ITV has acquired Irish thriller The Galway Bay Murders, starring Star Trek icons Keith Mulgrew and Colm Meaney.

New TV writer Ethan Worling's show follows seasoned NYPD detective Nora Savage (Mulgrew) as she arrives in the West of Ireland hoping to escape a painful past and find a quieter life. However, his plans are disrupted when the body of a young woman is discovered in a swamp, drawing Nora into a complex murder investigation alongside the local Garda team. The cast also includes John Connors (Gentlemen, Irish Blood), India Mullen (Ordinary People, Beneath the Salt Flats), Cillian O'Sullivan (Daredevil: Reborn, Star Trek: Strange Worlds) and Jack Rowan (A City Called Bad, Ruin). Mulgrew plays the title role and the series was born out of a conversation he had with Worling after the pair met by chance in Galway while the Star Trek actor was on holiday. Watch on Deadline

Irish broadcaster RTÉ was revealed at MIPCOM Cannes today, where ITV Studios, which distributes the show, also unveiled a new Australian TV label overseen by Sarah Richardson, along with a slew of sales for shows such as Steven Moffat's Number 10.

Bi-Cities TV is producing The Galway Bay Murders, formerly The Yank. Bi-Cities bosses recently told us that the series, which has a budget deficit from studio distributor ITV, is an example of an indie "taking more control of its own destiny" by making a lower-budget show over which they have almost editorial control.

Ethan Worling has created an absolutely magnetic crime thriller, with an outstanding cast led by Keith Mulgrew and Colm Meaney, a stunning and surprising drama from the heartland. We're delighted to be working with ITV Studios, Two Cities Television and RTÉ to bring this exciting new series to ITV audiences.

The series is directed by Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy (Baltimore, Kinsmen) and produced by Two Cities, Keeper Pictures and AS I AM Productions with support from STV Studios. Murders in Galway Bay is produced in association with ITV Studios and distributed internationally.
