Tara Turbo Drawbacks: Examining the Weak Points of Iran's Flagship Sedan

With a more powerful engine and better acceleration, the Tara Turbo marks a new step in Iran Khodro's sedan upgrade path. But is increasing engine output enough to make it a true flagship? Tara Turbo: Important technical upgrades, but not in every area. With the introduction of the Tara V4 Turbo, Iran Khodro has sought to [...]

Tara Turbo, with a more powerful engine and better acceleration, has taken a new step in upgrading Iran Khodro sedans, but is the increase in engine power enough to turn this car into a full-fledged flagship?

By introducing Tara V4 Turbo, Iran Khodro has tried to improve the status of this domestic sedan and give a suitable answer to buyers who expect more power from domestically produced cars. Using a 1.7-liter turbocharged EF7P TC engine with a maximum power of 160 horsepower and a torque of 240 Nm, along with a six-speed automatic transmission AT, makes Tara Turbo a more agile car compared to naturally aspirated versions. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h of this model is also announced in about 10 seconds.

However, stronger technical specifications alone cannot meet all the expectations of a flagship sedan. When a car with a more powerful engine is released on the market, other parts are expected to improve accordingly. From suspension and brakes to safety equipment, cabin quality and exterior design.

This is the main problem of Tara Turbo. Most of the progress of this car has taken place in the powertrain, while many of the features of the previous versions of Tara have been retained. For this reason, the Tara Turbo's disadvantages should go beyond its engine power and acceleration and determine what changes in the overall driving and ownership experience the buyer receives in exchange for choosing a more expensive and powerful version.

One of the most important disadvantages of Tara Turbo is the use of a semi-independent suspension system with torsion beam or torsion beam in the rear axle. This structure was also present in the previous versions of Tara, and it has certain advantages in terms of simplicity, cost of production and repairs, but compared to the multi-link suspension, it creates limitations in the independent adjustment of the movement of the rear wheels.

In the multi-link suspension system, engineers have more freedom to adjust the geometry of the wheels and control the behavior of the vehicle in different conditions. This feature can be effective in maintaining tire contact with the road surface, passing asymmetric unevenness and controlling body movements. Of course, the final quality of the ride and handling depends on the overall settings of the car, and you cannot make a definitive judgment about its performance just by observing the type of suspension.

Despite this, it was expected that the increase in the power of the Tara Turbo engine would be accompanied by a more serious review of the chassis and suspension. Higher torque and more power will be more valuable when the car can behave predictably in corners, sudden changes of direction and high-pressure driving.

Keeping the torsion beam system does not mean that Tara Turbo's handling is definitely weak, but it shows that the upgrade of this car in the suspension department has not been as extensive as the engine department. Therefore, it should not be expected that this model will offer a completely different riding and handling experience than other versions of Tara just because it has a more powerful engine.

Another weakness of Tara Turbo is the limitation of advanced driver assistance equipment or ADAS. This car comes with equipment such as stability control, traction control, cruise control, parking sensor and rear camera, but its set of features in the active safety department does not reach the level of advanced systems seen in many new cars.

For example, facilities such as automatic emergency braking, blind spot radar, adaptive cruise control, and lane keeping system can reduce the likelihood of some accidents in certain conditions or reduce the pressure of driving on long routes. The absence of these technologies in Tara Turbo makes its gap with the standard of expectations from a modern product, especially in the active safety sector, still noticeable.

Of course, a difference should be made between basic safety equipment and advanced driver assistance systems. Stability control and braking systems are very important, and the absence of ADAS alone does not mean that the car is unsafe. But when a flagship version is introduced, in addition to more power, it is expected to make significant progress in the field of safety technologies.

In this section, Tara Turbo moves more based on the features of previous versions. For this reason, buyers who consider driver assistance equipment as one of the important criteria for buying a new car may not be completely satisfied with the technology level of this sedan.

One of the problems that stand out after entering the cabin of Tara Turbo is maintaining the familiar atmosphere of the previous versions. The overall structure of the dashboard, the design of the center console and the interior design language have not changed fundamentally, and the cabin is still more focused on everyday use and simplicity than creating the feeling of a high-end product.

Of course, Tara's interior is acceptable for family use and everyday use, and equipment such as electric front seats, heated seats, sunroof and central display are provided in its equipped versions. The main issue is not the absolute lack of features, but the gap between the level of equipment and the perceived quality of the cabin with the expectations of a flagship sedan.

The use of relatively simple materials in parts of the dashboard and doors, the familiar design of the tools and the limited changes in the appearance of the cabin make the driver not feel a fundamental change when entering this car. In fact, the engine of the car has been upgraded, but the interior still has the same identity as before.

On the other hand, amenities are not measured only by the number of options. The quality of the display, the speed and simplicity of working with the multimedia system, the ergonomics of the keys and the design of the cabin details are also important. Tara Turbo has more opportunity to improve in this field, especially if it is to be placed in a higher position than the domestically produced sedans.

The increase in power of the Tara Turbo engine is not reflected in the appearance of the car. In terms of the overall shape of the body, the design of the lights and the main lines, this model is absolutely similar to other versions of Tara, and its changes in appearance are not as impressive as its technical differences.

Of course, a different appearance is not necessarily a condition for the success of a more powerful version. Some automakers prefer to keep the original design of the product and focus on the powertrain instead of expensive body changes. However, for a car that is supposed to have a higher position in a car manufacturer's product family, exclusive changes can help form its independent identity.

Different rims, sportier details in the bumpers or limited changes in the front grille and rear section could make the Turbo version more distinctive without deviating from the original Tara design. Such changes do not necessarily improve the performance of the car, but they have an impact on the shopping experience and the feeling of product differentiation.

In the current situation, the main difference between Tara Turbo and other versions is under the hood, not in the appearance of the body. Therefore, buyers who expect the flagship version to have a more special place visually may feel that the changes are not extensive enough.

Due to the use of higher air pressure to produce higher power, the turbocharged engine requires basic maintenance and careful attention to periodic services. This does not mean that the Tara Turbo engine is necessarily expensive or less durable, but it shows that the owner should be more sensitive to its maintenance conditions.

Using oil with specifications approved by the manufacturer, taking care of the cooling system and following the service schedule are very important in turbo engines. Also, the quality of repairs and access to dedicated parts can affect the long-term cost of ownership.

In the Iranian market, the issue of access to a repairman familiar with new engines and supply of parts is also important. Part of Tara's parts are shared with the previous versions, but it cannot be assumed that all the special components of the turbo engine are also in the same situation in terms of price and availability.

On the other hand, the behavior of the automatic transmission in real driving should also be considered. Engine and transmission coordination in acceleration, reversing and city traffic is a part of the driving experience that cannot be determined by looking at power and torque numbers. For an accurate evaluation of Tara Turbo, it is better to check the performance of this set in different conditions and the cost of its services in the long term.

As a result, these cases should be placed more in the category of subjects that need to be examined and evaluated rather than definite and proven disadvantages; But they will be very important for buyers who intend to keep the car for several years.

Tara Turbo has made significant progress in terms of powertrain compared to naturally aspirated versions. 160 horsepower engine, 240 Nm torque and declared acceleration of about 10 seconds make it an attractive option for those interested in more agile domestic sedans.

But on the other hand, keeping the torsion beam rear suspension, the lack of clear evidence of appropriate upgrade of the brake hardware, the limitation of ADAS equipment, the simplicity of the cabin and the lack of visual difference with other versions of Tara, are some of the weaknesses that affect the position of this car as a flagship. The long-term maintenance cost and actual performance of the engine and transmission assembly are also issues to be considered alongside technical specifications.

Finally, the most important weakness of Tara Turbo is that its improvement happened mostly in the engine department and it has not been developed as much in other departments. If the priority of the buyer is better acceleration and a more powerful engine, this car can be a significant choice, but if there is an expectation of an upgraded product with a more modern cabin, advanced safety technologies and more extensive technical changes, Tara Turbo is still far from such an expectation.

The final purchase value of this sedan will also depend on the supply price, actual driving performance and comparison of its features and ownership cost with competitors such as Dana Plus Turbo Automatic. The Tara Turbo is a positive step in the direction of increasing the power of domestic sedans, but to be worthy of the flagship title in all aspects, the increase in engine power alone is not enough.
