The Secrets Behind the Blooming of Colorful Flowers in One of the World's Driest Deserts!
The remarkable "Flowering Desert" phenomenon in Chile shows how unusual rainfall can awaken dormant seeds and create a new ecosystem in a short time.
This desert turns into a sea of flowers after rain!
The rare phenomenon of the "flowering desert" in Chile shows how unusual rainfall can wake up dormant seeds and create a new ecosystem in a short time.
Ambassador Arjan-Yekta Farahani: The Atacama desert in Chile, which is one of the driest regions on earth, has turned into a vast plain of colorful flowers after the exceptional rainfall of 2026. This phenomenon, which is called "flowering desert", is the result of the awakening of seeds and underground organs of plants that sometimes stay in the soil for years waiting for suitable conditions.
This event, called Desierto Florido in Spanish, is not just a sight to behold; Rather, it is an example of adaptation of plants to very dry environments and the decisive role of water in their life cycle.
Atacama is located in a region of Chile where rainfall is very little and irregular in many places. However, lack of water does not mean complete absence of life. Many plants in this region have strategies to survive in harsh conditions; including the production of seeds that can remain in the soil for a long time and do not germinate until the right conditions are provided.
When rainfall increases sufficiently, soil moisture allows the seeds and underground organs of plants to resume their activity. Seeds germinate, plants grow, and in a relatively short space of time, colorful flowers appear in parts of the desert.

Seeds that wait for years
One of the most fascinating aspects of this phenomenon is the ability of plants to survive long periods of drought. Some seeds and underground organs of plants can remain dormant in adverse conditions and start their growth cycle when sufficient moisture arrives.
According to reports related to the Flowering Desert phenomenon, in the event of 2026, more than 200 plant species have flourished in parts of the Atacama. Flowers with pink, purple, red, yellow and white colors have created a completely different view from the usual face of this area.
The role of El Nino in the blooming of the desert
According to European Union Copernicus, one of the factors affecting this event is the changes in weather patterns in the Pacific Ocean. The El Niño phenomenon is related to the change in atmospheric circulation patterns and rainfall distribution in parts of the world, and in some years it can create more favorable conditions for rainfall in parts of the Atacama.
However, it should not be assumed that El Nino alone and in all circumstances will cause the desert to flourish. The amount of rainfall in each region, temperature and local characteristics of the environment also play a role in determining the extent of flowering.
Previous studies of the Atacama show that large flowering events are usually accompanied by an unusual increase in precipitation. Using satellite data, researchers have also been able to identify and compare the changes in the vegetation of this region in different periods.
From a few flowers to the formation of an ecosystem
Flowers provide food resources for pollinators, and plant growth can affect relationships between plants, insects, reptiles, and birds. The research conducted on the Atacama Flowering Desert also presents this event as an opportunity to investigate biological interactions in very dry environments.
However, this ecosystem is temporary. Plants have a limited opportunity to grow, flower and produce seeds. As humidity decreases and dryness increases, flowers wither and much of the landscape reverts to its previous dry state.
Contrary to popular belief, turning the desert into a flower-covered plain does not mean the end of drought or a permanent change in the region's climate. This phenomenon depends on a set of suitable conditions that may not be repeated in consecutive years.
