This Folding House Can Be Set Up in Under Two Hours! (+Photos)
The Camping House folding home, transportable by car, features insulated panels and solar energy capability, designed to bring the camping experience closer to home living.
Safir Arjan - Imagine being able to go to the heart of nature with your SUV, carry a well-equipped house on the back of the car, and in just a few hours, turn it into a real shelter with living space, kitchen and bathroom. This idea is the basis of designing a project called Camping House; A mobile and foldable home that tries to bridge the gap between the freedom of camping and the comfort of a real home.
This conceptual project was developed by the American design studio Atelier Lune. Na Shen, the architect of this project, who before establishing his own studio, has worked in Gensler and Zaha Hadid Architects, has undertaken the design of a structure that has the ability to be moved and, after being installed, looks like a complete architectural building.
A house that turns from a folding structure into a two-story building
The main difference between a camping house and many small mobile homes is in the way it opens. Most of the portable houses, after reaching the destination, still keep their boxy and fixed shape; But this project is designed using a folding shell that opens at the location and turns into an A-shaped structure.
In this design, the structural components are moved through engineered hinges and joints and are locked in the final position after opening. Sealed joints and insulated panels are also intended to protect against weather conditions; For this reason, the designer's idea is not just to build a shelter for summer nights, but to create a space for use in colder conditions and even winter.
In addition to creating a different appearance, the sloping form of the roof has a practical function. This structure helps to direct rain and snow and provides users with a larger interior volume while occupying limited space on the ground. The result is a space that, when opened, appears much larger than the initial dimensions of the structure on the trailer.
Three modules for living, cooking and working
The camping house is designed based on three main modules, each of which has a specific task and together form a flexible set for staying in nature.
The Residential Port module houses the main part of living and sleeping. The furniture of this part is designed in such a way that it can be changed in a short period of time; In this way, the space used during the day can be turned into a resting place at night, without the need for separate rooms and additional space.
The utility section module (Utility Port) is intended for more practical facilities. In this section, the kitchen and bathroom are located; Facilities that are in many camping equipment become limited and reduced versions. The goal of the designers in this project is to provide an experience closer to everyday life and reduce dependence on external facilities.
Extended Port module is also designed to increase usable space. This section can be used as a work space, warehouse or guest accommodation according to the user's needs. Such a structure allows the camping house to adapt to the different needs of users instead of providing a fixed layout.
The deployment process is designed accordingly. After reaching the destination, the base of the structure is stabilized, the joints are released and the folding sections are opened to form the interior. According to the published information about this project, two people can complete the process of setting it up in less than two hours.
Design for living off urban grids
One of the important aspects of camping house is to pay attention to stay independent from conventional urban infrastructure. In the design of this project, the possibility of using solar systems, rainwater collection and natural ventilation has been considered; Features that can reduce the need for some permanent infrastructure.
Natural ventilation is done through a mechanism called a solar chimney. By taking advantage of the temperature difference and natural air movement, this method helps to circulate the air flow in the indoor space and can reduce the dependence on mechanical ventilation equipment.
Also, no permanent foundation is considered for this house. This feature not only makes it easier to move the structure, but also enables the use of land with less physical intervention. Such an approach would be attractive for areas where preserving the natural state of the land is important, including some tourist spaces and environmentally sensitive environments.
Of course, the real independence of this house depends on the capacity of solar equipment, water storage, sewage management and other facilities that will be used in the final version; Details for a concept project still need practical evaluation.
From adventure travel to temporary accommodations
The portability and quick opening of the camping house does not limit the range of possible applications to personal travel and camping. Designers can consider this idea for other scenarios; including creating small nature tourism residences, providing temporary shelters in areas affected by the crisis and using them in areas that are facing housing shortages.
The possibility of connecting several units to each other also adds to the flexibility of the design. In this way, instead of establishing an independent house, it is possible to form a small set of connected units that provide users with more living and functional spaces. Such a collection can be collected and moved to another place at the end of the season or after the end of the need.
This feature offers a different approach to architecture compared to conventional buildings. In traditional construction, the building is designed for long-term establishment in one place; But in a camping house, the ability to collect and leave the place is part of the design logic from the beginning.
Will the camping house reach the production stage?
Despite the attractive idea and anticipated capabilities, the Camping House is still a concept project and its commercial launch has not been announced. Therefore, capabilities such as deployment speed, performance of insulation in winter, durability of connections and degree of independence from infrastructure should be carefully evaluated in case of making a practical example.
Carrying this structure with an SUV also depends on the final weight, dimensions of the trailer and the permissible towing capacity of the car; An issue that cannot be definitively concluded without the final technical specifications.
However, the main value of the camping house lies in the question it raises: Does the house have to depend on a piece of land to provide comfort and architectural quality? This project tries to show that maybe it is possible to establish a new balance between mobile living and having a suitable interior space.
If this idea ever becomes a usable product, it could take the definition of mobile tiny houses beyond a cabin on wheels; Towards a structure that gathers along the journey, takes shape at the destination, and provides a different experience of life in nature without the need for permanent construction.
