Can leg bone stimulation help repair the damaged brain?

In a study published in the prestigious journal Nature Neuroscience, researchers investigated the effect of applying controlled mechanical pressure to the tibia, the large front leg bone, in animal models. The results of experiments on mice and pigs showed that this mechanical stimulation can help improve motor and cognitive performance after traumatic brain injury and stroke. In the animals receiving this intervention, a decrease in the death of nerve cells, chronic inflammation of the brain and an increase in signs of nerve regeneration were also observed. The secret of this relationship is in a protein called PIEZO1! Bone cells known as osteocytes have a protein sensitive to mechanical forces called PIEZO1. This protein allows cells to detect and respond to physical stress. The researchers found that bone stimulation can induce these cells to release molecules such as IL-1R2 and HSP70. Also, the amount of some factors effective on neuroprotection and repair, including BDNF, increased in the blood. These molecules may help the damaged brain heal by reducing inflammation and protecting nerve cells. Is this method effective for humans? It is not clear yet. Although the results of the experiment on two animal species are promising, the effectiveness and safety of this method in humans need clinical studies. Therefore, pressing or tapping the leg should not be considered a proven method of treating stroke or brain injury. In such situations, immediate medical attention is critical. This research provides a new look at the relationship between bone and brain and shows that maybe in the future this biological relationship can be used to develop new rehabilitation methods.

If you experience heaviness or digestive discomfort after consuming some protein foods, it is important to choose the type of protein and its preparation method. Eggs, chicken, tofu, and Greek yogurt are among the options that are usually easier to digest and can be part of a balanced diet to support gut health.
