BMW Unveils M760 xDrive: V8 Engine Returns with 570 Horsepower

BMW has introduced the new M760 xDrive, filling the gap left by a powerful eight-cylinder engine in the 7 Series lineup. The luxury sedan is equipped with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and delivers roughly 570 horsepower, offering stronger performance than the previous 760i. However, […]

By introducing the new M760 xDrive model, BMW filled the void of a powerful eight-cylinder engine in the 7 Series family. This luxury sedan is equipped with a 4.4-liter V8 twin turbo engine and with a power of about 570 horsepower, it provides a stronger performance than the previous 760i. However, there is no return of the popular V12 engine that made the previous generation 760i so special. A topic that may disappoint old fans of BMW's flagship sedans.

When the facelift version of the BMW 7 Series was introduced earlier this year, there was no place for a powerful eight-cylinder engine in its various variants. At that time, BMW promised that it will solve this deficiency in the continuation of the life cycle of the new model. Now, with the introduction of the M760 xDrive, this German company has fulfilled its promise.

As we mentioned, under the hood of the BMW M760 xDrive is the famous 4.4-liter V8 engine. This engine is equipped with two turbo chargers and can produce 570 horsepower. For comparison, the previous BMW 760i had 536 horsepower. Therefore, the new 34 hp model has become more powerful; An increase that, along with the sportier character of the M Performance version, increases the appeal of this large sedan for those interested in fast and fast driving. The xDrive four-wheel drive system is offered as standard in the BMW M760 xDrive. As a result, the high power of the engine is more effectively transferred to the road surface.

Needless to say, BMW has not yet announced the torque of the M760 xDrive engine. For comparison, the previous 760i's engine produced 750 Nm of torque. Therefore, until the release of official information, it is not possible to make an accurate judgment about the superiority of the torque of the new model. We should also remind you that the presence of the M logo on the body of the BMW M760 xDrive does not mean that this car becomes a full-fledged product of the M series. This version is placed in the category of M Performance products; That is, a model with better performance than the regular versions, but lower than the cars that are known as independent and exclusive products of the M segment.

One of the important points about the BMW M760 xDrive is the company's decision to use a V8 engine instead of a twelve-cylinder engine. You may know that the previous generation M760i with its V12 engine had a special place among fans of luxury and powerful sedans. For many enthusiasts, this engine was the symbol of the ultimate luxury and engineering in BMW gasoline cars. But in the new M760 xDrive model, there is no news of this engine and BMW has gone to the smaller 4.4-liter twin turbo engine. This decision allows the company to still have a powerful sedan with an internal combustion engine in its product portfolio, without going back to the heavy and fuel-efficient V12 engine. Those who are still looking for a twelve-cylinder car should choose a product from the Rolls-Royce brand. For example, the Rolls-Royce Ghost can still be an option for customers who are not willing to compromise on the number of cylinders!

Editing the name is another noteworthy point in the new BMW M760 xDrive model. The "i" suffix that was seen in the 760i name has been removed from the M760; In the past, this word referred to the fuel injection system, but BMW plans to use it exclusively for its all-electric vehicles from now on.

More importantly, the previous BMW 760i was not available in the European market, but the new M760 xDrive is going to be sold in this continent as well. This shows that BMW has been able to align the V8 engine with the requirements of the Euro 7 emission standard. With the entry of the M760 xDrive into the market, the number of BMW 7 Series models with the M Performance badge reaches three. The other two members of this family are the M760e plug-in hybrid model and the all-electric i7 M70. As such, BMW has considered three different paths for customers who want higher performance than the regular versions: V8 gasoline engine, plug-in hybrid drivetrain and all-electric drivetrain.

The return of the V8 engine to the 7 series takes place in a situation where the competition in the luxury and powerful sedan market continues. Mercedes-Benz has chosen a different path with the AMG S 63 E Performance model and uses a plug-in hybrid system to combine high performance with electrification technology.

In contrast, BMW continues to emphasize the power of the gasoline engine with the M760 xDrive and offers electric and hybrid options in other versions of the 7 Series. This approach makes buyers choose between different technologies according to their taste and needs.

On the other hand, the traditional competitor of these two models, the Audi A8, is on the verge of stopping production. According to the published report, Audi will stop production of this flagship sedan this year, with no direct replacement for it in the near future. Of course, the possibility of introducing the new generation of A8 in the coming years is not completely ruled out, but the reports indicate a gap of several years until its possible release. As a result, the BMW M760 xDrive will have less to worry about from a direct competitor from the Audi brand for now.

The BMW M760 xDrive will not be the only member of the 7 Series with a V8 engine, as BMW plans to launch a more luxurious version of this car under the Alpina brand in 2027. The Alpina model is supposed to be a competitor to the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, although the competition with this product will not be the same in all markets. Mercedes-Maybach is still available with a V12 engine in some markets, and in this sense, it has a special advantage for customers interested in twelve-cylinder engines.

The interesting thing is that the Alpina version will use a V8 engine with a special configuration, and its engine will not be exactly the same as the M760 engine. Official information about the specifications of this engine has not been released yet, but it is possible that Alpina engineers are aiming for more torque at low engine speeds instead of just focusing on maximum power. Such settings are more in harmony with the personality of Alpina products; Cars that are usually designed for fast and long journeys, high comfort and providing acceptable power in various driving conditions.

There is no word on the price of the BMW M760 xDrive, but it is unlikely that this car will be cheaper than the previous 760i. This version was offered with a base price of 117,395 dollars. Due to the increase in power and the change in the position of the new model, there is a possibility of a price increase for the M760 xDrive. Currently, the six-cylinder version of the 740 xDrive is sold at a base price of $104,350. Therefore, the M760 xDrive will most likely be placed in a higher price range.

After entering the market, the Alpina version will have a larger price gap with regular BMW models. For a better understanding of this issue, we can refer to the Mercedes Maybach S Class, the version equipped with a V12 engine and its full features, has a price of about 275 thousand dollars.
