Author Pierce Brown's Red Rising book series has officially been greenlit for a film adaptation by Paramount Pictures, with Hunger Games auteur Francis Lawrence directing.
Red Rising has been getting the Hollywood treatment more than a decade after it was first released in 2014. As The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on October 16, Paramount Pictures has picked up the rights to the series, which will be directed by Francis Lawrence.
Lawrence is best known for his work on another young adult adaptation of the Hunger Games franchise, having directed all films in the franchise except for the first film directed by Gary Ross. Lawrence recently directed the Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk as well as the upcoming Sunrise on the Reaping, the latest in the Hunger Games franchise.
Lawrence is also set to produce Red Rising alongside Cameron McConomie for about:blank, as well as Francesco Goodhuis and the author of the epic Red Rising, Pierce Brown.
Brown reacted to the news in an Instagram post, writing, "Let the iron rain. Damn, I love this team."
Justin Rhodes joins Red Rising to write the script. Eagle-eyed IGN readers will recognize the name, as he's also in Netflix's live-action Bioshock movie, which is apparently still in early development. Rhodes is known for films such as Terminator: Dark Fate, Traveler and Purgatory.
Red Dawn is an extensive book series that is set to end with its seventh and final chapter, which does not yet have a release date. Set in a galaxy with a strict, color-coded caste system, these books follow Darrow, a Red—the lowest rung on the social totem pole. He and his fellow Reds work tirelessly in the mines of Mars, hoping to one day make the planet habitable for humans...but it turns out that it's already been done generations ago.
After learning of this massive betrayal, Daroo sets out on a mission to infiltrate the highest social class, the golds, and set things right across the galaxy in a deadly conflict that will last more than a decade. If you're interested in getting into the book, you can check out our guide to navigating this sprawling adventure, which will no doubt come in handy after the movie finally comes out.
It's an exciting ambassador for book readers, after the fourth series of Ball Prime Video found Xaden and Violet starring Emilio Sakraya and Esther McGregor.
