The Chinese Foreign Ministry called the US request for Beijing to join the nuclear disarmament talks unrealistic

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning noted that this demand is also baseless and unfair

Beijing, October 16. /TASS/. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning called Washington's request to Beijing to join the nuclear arms control talks unfair and unrealistic.

This Chinese diplomat said in a press conference explaining the recent statements of US President Donald Trump: At this stage, the [US] request to China to participate in the so-called nuclear disarmament talks is unfair, baseless and unrealistic.

According to Mao, Beijing has repeatedly stated its position on this matter. He explained: "The United States, as a country that has a huge nuclear arsenal, must honor its special priority obligations in the field of nuclear disarmament in good faith. The international community also has this opinion."

Mao added that China's nuclear capabilities are "completely overshadowed by the arsenals of the US and Russia".

Trump previously said he had raised the issue of nuclear arms control in talks with his Russian and Chinese counterparts, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.
